That is a very good question. I admit to a sneaking respect for Blair because of his commitment to the War on Islamic terrorism, but at home the message has been very different.

I'm not sure. Blair loves nothing more than doing deals. He's quite happy to do deals with terrorists, but with Islamic terrorism there is no deal to do. The jihadis would not be appeased by anything except perhaps the whole world's submitting to Islam. I sense that Blair has grasped this (unlike most in his own party - Mo Mowlam for example wants to talk to the terrorists to understand their grievances and see what can be done to address them).

The main reason I believe that Bush convinced Blair that there is no deals to be had is that what Blair is doing at home seems quite different:

1) signing off the rights to curb immigration,
2) the much criticized hate-speech law,
...
